Assessor's Office
The Town of Washington Assessor’s Office is responsible for maintaining the official assessment roll for both the Town of Washington and the Village of Millbrook. The assessment roll establishes the base value from which property taxes are levied. In accordance with New York State law, all assessments must be maintained at a uniform percentage of market value each year.
Accurate property record information is essential to the integrity of the assessment roll. Each parcel in the Town has an individual record file that includes ownership details, property inventory, and a sketch of any structures. Property owners are strongly encouraged to periodically review this information to ensure accuracy. It is the responsibility of each property owner to monitor their assessment, particularly after the tentative roll is filed.
The Assessor works closely with the Building Department to track new construction, improvements, and property changes. Building permits and plans issued by both the Village of Millbrook and the Town of Washington are submitted to the Assessor, and property records are updated after site visits, commonly referred to as “road reviews.” Improvements made in the prior year may result in an increase in assessed value.
The Assessor is available to meet with property owners to discuss individual parcels and provide information about assessments. Please note that the Assessor does not determine tax rates and cannot provide guidance on the policies of taxing jurisdictions, which include local school districts, Dutchess County, the Town of Washington, the Village of Millbrook, and various special districts.
